Nature Photography: Plight of the bumble bee
Shot of the Month - September 2008

This photograph of a bumble bee going about its daily work was taken with an Olympus Evolt E-410 digital slr camera and 50mm lens. The DSLR was hand held and the lens was manually focused. Timing was everything as the bumble bee only spends a few seconds on each flower before moving off to the next flower. With depth of field being limited to a few centimeters, the focusing was critical in obtaining a sharp photograph of the whole bee and the bees' head in particular. The title "Plight of the Bumble Bee" is just a play on words based on the famous orchestral interlude "Flight of the BumbleBees" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov as the bee population has suffered dramatically over recent years through man made pesticides and other factors.
