Travel Photography: Japanese Woman Dressed as a Maiko (Trainee Geisha) in Gion District
Shot of the Month - September 2007

This photograph of a woman dressed as a Maiko (Trainee Geisha) was taken in Kyoto Japan on a Kodak P880 digital camera in the late afternoon. There a few businesses specialising in carrying out makeovers on tourists as well as Japanese women to transform them into a Maiko. Photographing a real Maiko or Geisha (called Geiko in Kyoto) is quite difficult as there are very few left in the Gion and Pontocho areas of Kyoto. Being entertained by a Maiko or Geisha in a traditional Japanese teahouse is the preserve of rich Japanese businessmen and their guests. For foreigners, this is still an extremely rare experience. The photograph was cropped and manipulated using the artist tools in Adobe Photoshop.
