Sigma unveils 14 megapixel SD14 digital SLR & DP1 digital compact.

Sigma have unveiled two new high end cameras. The new Sigma SD14 digital SLR uses a 14 megapixel Foveon X3® direct image sensor which unlike conventional sensors, has each of the primary RGB colors on each and every pixel providing more accurate colors. In addition, Sigma has also launched the Sigma DP1 digital compact which also has the same 14 megapixel Foveon sensor and a wide angle lens equivalent to 28mm on a 35mm camera.

The Sigma SD14 digital SLR camera uses a third generation 14 megapixel Foveon sensor which gives a maximum resolution of 4608 x 2072 pixels which according to Sigma, provides a higher degree of color accuracy coupled with sharper results on a pixel by pixel comparison with other sensors.

Other key features include the Sigma SA lens mount, a high resolution 2.5" LCD, viewfinder coverage of 98%, shutter speed range of 30 seconds to 1/4000, ISO range of 100 to 1600, 3 frames per second burst mode, hotshoe for external flash, flash sync speed of 1/180, sensor dust protector, mirror lockup to minimise camera shake for macro & night photography and a new faster autofocus system featuring five focusing points.

The Sigma DP1 offers something a little different to the normal high end compact supporting a zoom lens. The DP1 has a high quality 28mm lens (35mm equivalent) to maximise image quality from the Foveon 14 megapixel sensor.

Other features include Sigma's 'True' image processor, a high resolution 2.5" LCD, full manual controls for creativity and RAW support in addition to standard jpeg.

Pricing and availability are unknown at the present time.
