Nikon announces its' smallest digital SLR camera - the Nikon D40

Nikon Corporation has announced the much rumored Nikon D40 digital SLR camera. The Nikon D40 is Nikon's smallest and lightest digital SLR measuring 126 x 94 x 64mm and weighing only 475 g without battery and memory card. The D40 will no doubt appeal to many digital compact users looking to move up to an entry level digital SLR which is small. light, easy to carry and compatible with Nikkor lenses.

The D40 offers a 2.5 inch LCD, 6.1 megapixel sensor, Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II, full manual and auto controls, super fast autofocus using Nikon's Multi-CAM530 autofocus module, rechargeable Li-ion battery offering 470 shots from a single charge, bright viewfinder with 0.8x magnification, shutter speed range from 30 seconds to 1/4000 of a second, built in flash, hot shoe and support for both jpeg & raw file formats.

The Nikon D40 will be available in December 2006 for an estimated price of $599.95 for both the Nikon D40 body and its' new standard lens - the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom.
