Nikon D40 digital SLR rumours
Rumours of a new Nikon D40 digital SLR camera have been leaked on the French photographic magazine Chasseur d'Images. The new Nikon D40 appears to be a smaller sibling to the Nikon D50 and has a weight of only 475 grams which is 145 grams lighter than the D50. The D40 measures 9cm x 12.6cm x 6.5cm which makes it 1cm smaller in height than the D50. A smaller digital SLR in Nikon's line up will be welcome competition to the Olympus E-400 but the Olympus has a 10 megapixel sensor while the D40 will only have a 6 megapixel CCD. Other features include a top flash sync speed of 1/500, a 230k 2.5 inch high resolution LCD and raw file format support. A new standard Nikon AF-S DX ED 18-55 f3.5-5.6 zoom lens will also be launched. Both the Nikon D40 and the new Nikon standard zoom lens will be launched in December 2006. There is no information on price at the moment but the D40 is likely to cost less than the D50.
