Travel Photography: Taroko Gorge in Taiwan
Shot of the Month - July 2009

Taiwan is not often perceived as a destination for exotic travel due to the islands manufacturing and high tech base which exports millions of computer and other items around the world. The island was called Ilha Formosa (the Beautiful Island) by Portuguese sailors when they arrived on the island in the 17th century. Travelling away from the major cities like Taipei, it is easy to find stunning island landmarks like Sun Moon Lake or Taroko Gorge as shown in the photo above. The photograph was taken with a Kodak P880 8 megapixel camera with a wide to telephoto professional quality Schneider lens. Taroko National Park is one of seven national parks in Taiwan and is abundant with marble. Taroko Gorge is nineteen kilometers long and in the picture above, the scale of the gorge can be seen when compared to the two men in the picture above the copyright symbol near the bottom right of the picture.
