Digital Cameras: Canon A710 IS, A630 & A640

Canon announces 3 Powershot digital cameras: A710 IS, A630 & A640.

Canon Powershot digital cameras are renowned the world over for their high quality lenses, manual controls and good image quality. The three new Powershot cameras released by Canon for Photokina 2006 continue this tradition and the cameras will appeal to both beginners and enthusiasts. The A710 IS, A630 and A640 are upgrades to the popular A700, A610 and A620 respectively and their features are described in more detail below. All three cameras retain the respected Digic II processor which offers fast operation and image processing.


Canon Powershot A710 IS Digital Camera


The Powershot A710 IS improves on its' predecessor with a 7.1 CCD sensor, longer movie recording times and for the first time in a Powershot camera, optical image stabilization is offerred allowing sharp images to be taken in lower light. The A710 also has full manual controls for creative control, a 2.5 inch LCD, compatibility with SD, SDHC and MMC memory cards and a new feature called 'Safety Zoom' which allows the user to use the digital zoom without the usual lowering of quality. The Powershot A710 retains the 35 to 210 mm (35mm equiv) F2.8-4.8 zoom. The A710 IS will become available in October 2006 with a rrp of $399.

Canon Powershot A630 Digital Camera

The Powershot A630 offers a 8 megapixel sensor compared to the 6 megapixels found on the A610. The A630 also has the same safety flash feature as found on the A710 IS. Other features remain the same including the excellent 35 to 140 mm (35mm equiv) F2.8-4.1 zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD which can be rotated, full manual and auto controls, SD, SDHC and MMC card compatibility and 2 AA or NIMH batteries. The A630 will become available in October 2006 for a rrp of $299.

Canon Powershot A640 Digital Camera

The A620 was highly successful and much admired. The Powershot A640 adds a 10 megapixel sensor but reviews will show whether this is a benefit or a backward step in terms of noise. The A640 also comes in a sleek black finish and retains the same lens as the A620. Other features include VGA movies at 30 fps and various scene modes. The Powershot A640 will be available in October 2006 for a rrp of $399.
